West Virginia Landlords Association Political Action Committee

WVLA PAC

What is a PAC?
A PAC (Political Action Committee) is a IRS recognized voluntarily funded, non-profit group  formed around a specific trade or business with a common belief or agenda. It is created to raise money for the purpose of educating and supporting issues or political candidates responsive to a PAC's interests. They key words here are "raise money". Unfortunately, today it requires substantial funding to run for a local, state, or federal office, or to cover the expenses of getting your word out regarding important issues.

"Your voice in the Capital"
One of the benefits of being a member of the West Virginia Landlord Association is having a group lobby for your business interests. Our WVLA lobbyist, is looking out for your interests by listening and talking to the legislators about bills and issues that affect Landlords so they understand our position. During the active Legislative Sessions, our WVLA sponsors a "coffee" at the state capital rotunda for all WVLA members to come, meet their representatives, and voice their opinions to their elected representatives face to face on matters under consideration.

Our Victories and Challenges!
In the past, WVLA has been directly involved in several issues that were decided in our favor. Most importantly were the relief in requiring Landlords to hire a licensed Contractor to perform work over $1,000 on your own rental property, and the halting of public service districts (PSD’s) charging Landlords for unpaid utility bills which are unpaid in the name of your Tenants!

There are even more important issues in which we were directly involved; including criminalizing excessive property damage by Tenants (now you must take civil action only), influencing the rewriting of the antiquated Landlord-Tenant law and of course reform of the insurance laws of our state. These issues are of extreme importance and affect all Landlords of WV.

But lobbying is only part of the influence we can employ to educate and to be heard and to create the laws that we must live by. Another very influential method is through a Political Action Committee, or PAC for short. Special interest groups such as farmers, technology groups and drug companies use PAC’s to gain direct influence in your government by spending big money. Smaller groups such as activist groups have PAC’s as well. To serve our interests, we have established a WVLA PAC and a PAC fund through our WVLA PAC committee to help our members.

Why join the WVLA PAC?
This is the one easy way to become involved and influence your law makers. You are supporting and protecting your business interests as part of a larger association. That’s how you get your voice heard! Our WVLA PAC is bipartisan and will support candidates that are open to learn about and resolve issues that negatively affect your business.

Join our Team and be part of the Change!
The only way we can make our association known and affect the law making process in West Virginia is by developing and showing strength through membership and member donations. Our goal is to have each member of the West Virginia Landlords Association become a WVLA-PAC sponsor as well. With your donation, you can help raise the voice of our association and make sure it is heard in Charleston or in your town! Please complete the membership form on the following page and mail today. If you think becoming involved will cost you, consider the cost of  your doing nothing!

Want more information?
Contact your local Chapter WVLA-PAC representative or email us directly to find out how you can help this important cause. You don’t have to be a  state or chapter member to contribute. Many contributors are not members, but understand our cause is also their cause, and the need for legislative oversight.
